"A just society ought not use the death penalty as a form of punishment"

Still don't know how I feel about it.

Erik... I think as of now you know what your standpoint on the death penalty is and when it is appropriate for society to use it as a punishment. We have discussed this in a personal conversation. I thought I would just re-cap what we were talking about. If Society values life as the highest price then the cost for taking a life is highest. When I state taking a life, I use in terms like murder, not war. Because in war, life must be taken...but that is besides the point. Since life is the most precious thing to us and we value it most, the cost is greatest, therefore, exercising the death penalty for taking a life is just.

Agreed. I never thought to compare it to war, however. I love how we are willing to defend human life with the death penalty, and then we turn around and fight wars over politics. I guess as Robert Heinlein said, "Freedom must regularly be renewed by the blood of patriots". Freedom is absolutely worth it.

But I digress... that's another good topic. I agree with your comment.

Yes, I wasn't associating war deaths to murder, however i just wanted to clarify that i was talking about strictly murder and that the death penalty applies to only that.

ok now that we have this straight, I got to thinking was thinking of specific incidents and wondered if they should apply to the death penalty. they are..such as unintentional man slaughter from a DUI car crash. Even though the driver may not be wanting to kill someone, due to their impairment from the alcohol, they crash into another car and kill the person. do you think the death penalty should apply if the guilty is charged with manslaughter.
